Comments on: Take Note Of The Sugar Level In Your Kids’ Growing Up Milk http://mytwogirls.net/?p=3155 WAHM's journey to bringing up two girls Sat, 30 Apr 2011 08:52:02 +0000 hourly 1 https://wordpress.org/?v=6.8.5 By: a-moms-diary http://mytwogirls.net/?p=3155&cpage=1#comment-135587 Sat, 30 Apr 2011 08:52:02 +0000 http://mytwogirls.net/?p=3155#comment-135587 The advertisement and the sugar calculator is grossly misleading. The calculator assumes that any carbohydrates in excess of 11g (which is the natural sugars found in milk) are all added sugars, which is not true. All sugars are carbohydrates, but long-chain polysaccharides, fibres, etc are also carbohydrates.

The advertisement also proclaims glucose syrup solids and corn syrup solids as sugars, but in fact, these glucose polymers, depending on the grade, contain between 60-90% long-chain polysaccharides, which acts as a source of energy, just like when we eat other carbohydrate like rice, bread, noodles. These of course, are eventually metabolised into glucose for easy absorption into the body, but these cannot be considered as added sugars, simply because they are not. In fact, the FAO/WHO Standard for Infant Formula states that lactose and glucose polymers should be the preferred carbohydrates in formula milk.

You are right to point out that most manufacturers will add minimal amount of sucrose (table sugar) into growing up milk to make them more palatable to young children but the amount is small, only about 2-3g, equivalent to about 1/2 teaspoon per serving.

I’m weaning baby soon and am concerned about sugar levels in formula. Would you know if any formula has a little LESS sugar? Was recommended Pediasure but heard it’s very sweet.
